Who We Are

The Herald was founded in 2009 by journalists who believed independent journalism was more necessary than ever. Today we reach 14 million monthly readers across 190 countries.

We are funded entirely by our readers. We carry no advertising and accept no sponsored content. Our only obligation is to the truth — and to you.

What We Stand For
I.
Independence

We answer to no proprietor, no advertiser and no political patron. Independence is not a luxury; it is the precondition for trust.

II.
Accuracy

We publish corrections prominently and without delay. The most important thing a news organisation can do is be right.

III.
Consequence

We cover stories that matter — not ones that are merely loud. Journalism that ignores consequence is entertainment.

IV.
Transparency

Our sources, methods and finances are disclosed wherever possible. We publish our annual accounts.

V.
Depth

We resist the compulsion to be first in favour of the determination to be thorough.

VI.
Humanity

Behind every story is a person, and behind every statistic is a life. We hold this truth as a discipline.
