United Nations Passes Landmark Resolution on Artificial Intelligence Governance

The first binding international framework for AI regulation passed with 147 votes, setting minimum standards for transparency and accountability.

The UN General Assembly has passed the first binding international framework for AI governance, with 147 nations in favour and 12 abstentions.

The resolution establishes minimum standards for transparency, accountability and human oversight, and creates a new monitoring body with power to issue compliance findings.

Nations must establish domestic AI regulatory authorities within three years and submit to periodic peer review.

“This is not the end of AI development,” said the Secretary-General. “It is the beginning of AI development being treated as a matter of public consequence.”
