The single-colour planting scheme — in which an entire outdoor space is organised around one colour family — creates effects of depth and complexity through the interplay of tone, texture and form rather than chromatic contrast.
“Colour is easy,” says one landscape architect. “It draws the eye and creates instant effect. Working without it forces you to think much harder about everything else.”
The most celebrated example remains the white garden of a historic English country house, which has influenced landscape architects for nearly a century.
