Basic Design Principles That Transform Even the Smallest Home Office

The difference between a home office that supports good work and one that undermines it is not a question of size or budget.

The home office has become one of the most important rooms in the house — and, frequently, one of the least considered. Assembled from whatever furniture was available, lit by whatever window was nearest, it is typically an afterthought that its occupant spends eight hours a day in.

The principles that make a good working environment are well understood and not expensive to apply. Light is the most important: natural light from the side, rather than behind or in front of the screen, reduces eye strain and supports the circadian rhythms that govern alertness through the day.

After light, the most important factor is the quality of the chair — not its appearance, but its ergonomic performance.
