The $340 billion merger of two former fossil fuel giants has created the world’s largest renewable energy company by installed capacity.

The combined entity will operate wind, solar, hydro and storage assets across 47 countries, with 380 gigawatts of total capacity.

The deal required the company to divest a significant natural gas portfolio and commit to net zero operational emissions by 2035.

Analysts described the merger as a signal of how rapidly the economics of energy have shifted over the past decade.
