A quarter century on, the race has become one of the most celebrated events on the international calendar.

Twenty-five years ago, the organisers announced their intention to run a grand touring race through the mountain passes of northern Italy. The response from the established motorsport community was predominantly sceptical.

Every prediction was wrong. The race now attracts entries from every major manufacturer and a waiting list of thousands. It has become a fixture not just of motorsport culture but of Italian cultural life.
